Maple-Baked Whole Apple

Living a sugar-free life is easy; except perhaps when you get to have meals that friends or family have prepared and there are yummy baked goods! A few times when people know our family has made a choice to eliminate processed sugar from what we eat, they have gone an extra mile to ensure there is no sugar in meals. That was the case at an especially wonderful dinner that we got invited to in our new home state of Texas.

That’s where I met the first maple-syrup-baked whole apple. It was sweet, sugar-free and down-right yummy! Let’s be honest, I just might have shed a few tears of joy while inhaling this dessert. I had to ask our thoughtful host how she made it. She shared and I tried to make it, a few times. Here’s the sugar-free, maple-wrapped recipe that I’ve found worked best:

6 Apples (e.g. honeycrisp)

1/2 cup maple syrup

1/2 cup walnuts

1/4 cup cranberries

4 tbsp butter

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees
  2. Core the apples and cut the base so the apples sit flat
  3. Arrange the apples on a baking dish, dot them with butter & drizzle with maple syrup
  4. Bake for10 minutes while covered
  5. Put the walnuts and cranberries in the center and drizzle syrup as needed
  6. Bake till the apples are tender
